SUSTAINABLE

INSURANCE FORUM

Established by the UN with the support of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) in December 2016, UNDP’s Sustainable Insurance Forum (SIF) is a global network of 38 insurance supervisors and regulators, overseeing 92% of the global insurance market. This collaborative network aims to address sustainability and climate change issues impacting insurance companies and markets, and policy holders in their jurisdictions.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE INSURANCE?

The global insurance sector plays a pivotal role in driving the transition to a low-carbon, resilient and sustainable global economy, both in terms of the risks it covers and the investments it makes.

Sustainable insurance involves a strategic approach, ensuring all activities within the insurance value chain are conducted in a responsible and forward-looking manner by identifying, assessing, managing, and monitoring risks and opportunities associated with environmental, social and governance issues.

The SIF Secretariat is hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). UNDP works in 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities and exclusion, and build resilience so countries can sustain progress. As the UN’s development agency, UNDP plays a critical role in helping countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

In early 2022, SIF became part of the UNDP Sustainable Finance Hub, an expert group of nearly 200 sustainable finance experts. Among its many key activities, the Hub provides the Secretariat to the G20 Sustainable Finance Working Group (SFWG).
