NATURE-INSURE

Objective

Delivered by UNDP Sustainable Insurance Forum (SIF), in partnership with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and KPMG, NATURE-INSURE was a global capacity-building programme for insurance regulators and supervisors. Running from June 2025 to June 2026, it strengthened supervisory understanding of biodiversity and nature-related financial risks and supported practical, mandate-aligned approaches to identifying, assessing and addressing these risks.

Building on SIF’s 2021 Scoping Study: Nature-related Risks in the Global Insurance Sector, the programme combined expert-led training, practical examples and peer exchange across four modules.

Programme modules

Module 1: Introduction to nature and biodiversity

Introduced key concepts, including nature, biodiversity, ecosystem services and natural capital. The module examined the drivers of biodiversity loss, the relationship between climate change and nature, and how nature-related dependencies, impacts and risks can affect insurers’ underwriting and investment activities.

Module 2: Nature-related disclosure frameworks and TNFD’s LEAP approach

Explored emerging nature-related disclosure frameworks, with a detailed introduction to the TNFD recommendations and LEAP approach. Participants considered how insurers can locate their interactions with nature, evaluate dependencies and impacts, and assess related risks and opportunities.

Module 3: Nature metrics, tools, data and scenario analysis

Examined the metrics, datasets and analytical tools available to financial institutions and supervisors. The module also explored emerging approaches to nature-related scenario analysis, their potential supervisory applications and their current limitations.

Module 4: Building the business case for nature-positive insurance

Used real-world case studies to explore how nature-positive insurance solutions can be developed and supported. The module considered opportunities for insurance products and investments, as well as the role supervisors can play in convening stakeholders, supporting market development and helping ensure that emerging solutions safeguard nature, protect communities and contribute to healthy insurance markets.

Results

Across the four modules, NATURE-INSURE delivered 11 hours of training and received 630 registrations from insurance regulators and supervisors across 65 organisations, reflecting strong interest within the supervisory community in nature-related risks and opportunities for the insurance sector.

Feedback from the final module was encouraging. Among 25 survey respondents, 96% said the webinar improved their understanding of how nature-positive insurance solutions can be developed or supported.

The programme provided regulators and supervisors with a common foundation for understanding nature-related financial risks and their relevance to insurance supervision. It introduced practical frameworks, data sources, analytical approaches and real-world examples that participants can draw on when considering potential supervisory responses.
