About Us

Established by the UN with the support of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) in 2016, the UNDP’s Sustainable Insurance Forum (SIF) is a global network of 40 insurance supervisors and regulators.

Our mission

To ensure climate risk management and other sustainability factors are integrated into the regulation and supervision of insurance companies. SIF helps supervisors keep pace with a fast-changing risk landscape and strengthens the insurance sector’s role in economic resilience, in support of the SDGs and national commitments such as NDCs and NBSAPs.

Activities

SIF catalyzes international collaboration among insurance supervisors and regulators, facilitates knowledge sharing, and drives the design and uptake of policy innovations, in support of the global insurance sector.

Exchange knowledge

Offer a trusted space for supervisors to share experience and early practice on sustainability risk.

Develop practical guidance

Produce research and tools supervisors can apply within their own mandates.

Build capacity

Strengthen supervisory capability, with particular attention to emerging markets and developing economies.

Connect and align

Work alongside the IAIS, NGFS, TNFD, UNEP FI and other partners to keep approaches coherent globally.

Leadership and governance

Since 2016 the chairmanship has rotated across jurisdictions, reflecting the Forum’s commitment to inclusive, globally representative leadership. Previous chairs were: California Department of Insurance, Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, Bank of England, Monetary Authority of Singapore. Currently, SIF is chaired by the South African Reserve Bank.

The Forum is hosted by UNDP and supported by a dedicated Secretariat. Members meet twice a year to advance the work programme and set strategic direction.

A word from SIF Chair

DG Fundi Tshazibana

Since 2016 SIF has helped shape regulatory and supervisory thinking on sustainability related risks, through the sharing of ideas, testing solutions and practical initiatives. By providing insurance supervisors and regulators with a dedicated platform to explore climate-related risks, leveraging UNDP global presence and fostering cooperation with relevant partners, such as the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), SIF remains committed to building the insurance sector’s resilience and ability to serve society in a changing world.
